Horror Poster Analysis - Friday the 13th

This is a poster for the film ‘Friday the 13th’. The title of the film is in san-serif font and is located in the middle of the bottom of the poster. This is the largest font size in the poster as the film title is a vital piece of information. The typeface is bold so it will stand out from a distance, especially on the black background it’s placed on. The font is also red, this could indicate danger or/and blood, both of which are typical of a slasher horror film. The name of the film (Friday the 13th) indicates the films genre. Friday the 13th is nationally known as an unlucky day. Using a day people can relate to also adds to the fear of the film making people think that the horrific events happening in the film could happen to them.
The ‘billing block’ is located at the bottom of the poster. This contains key production and institution information for the film. This is located at the bottom of the poster in small font as it is not as important as the appealing title and image. However, is of interest to fans of horror films looking to find a certain director, producer, composer or costume designers name. The colour of the billing blocks keeps to the colour scheme of the poster (red, black and white) in order to not look out of place.
Just below the billing block is a line saying ‘www.fridaythe13thmovie.com’. This web address gives the potential interested audience the information for finding out more about the film that hasn’t been included in the poster. This piece of information is small as it may not be important to all viewers of the poster. However, a clear front is used so those who are interested know exactly which website to use. This website address is an example of synergy.
Above the film title is a line saying ‘from the producers of Texas Chainsaw Massacre’. This information informs the audience that a talented producer is working on this film. This information is an attempt to attract fans of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or horror fans who are aware that is a horror film.
This film appears to be set in a forest by a source of water. This water source is probably the Crystal Lake as at the top of the poster it says ‘welcome to the crystal lake’. This image shows a scene in a rural location during the evening. This is typical of a horror film as classically bad things happen at night. Especially, in isolated areas like a forest where there is no one to help you. The rolling fog/mist is used to restrict the viewing of the audience and add to the mystery, uncertainty and fear of the narration.
There is a shadow on the face of the character being shown meaning half of his/her is light and half is good. This may represent a fight between good and evil in the film. The villain shown in the poster is framed from a long shot. This type of shot has been used to fit the whole of the character in (Including the outfit being worn). A low angle show has been used to make it look as if the character is looking down on the audience making you feel venerable to this killer. The green and blue colour scheme has been used to make the location look miserable and the mist/fog is iconographic of suspense and mystery as it has the ability to hide people, places and objects.
The central image is of a masked killer. This tells the audience that the film will likely centre this psychopath. The characters clothes indicate that he’s a villain. He/she is wearing a mask not only to scare people but also to hide their identity so the horrific things they do cannot be traced back to them.

The dull colour scheme along with the mist/fog surrounding the character give the poster a mysterious tone. The large knife being held by the killer is a connotative of death telling the audience that the film will be violent and a knife is iconographic of the horror genre.
